Jack Butel produced arguably the most competitive weekend of his Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship career to date at Silverstone, despite missing out on a fourth points finish of the season.
The Jersey-based racer was looking to impress after a tough weekend at Croft a week earlier, and his pace was evident from the moment he hit the track for the opening practice session as he lapped 13th fastest in his Hyundai i30 Fastback N.
Things went even better for the EXCELR8 with TradePriceCars.com driver in the second session as he set the tenth best time, leaving the 25-year-old in confident mood going into qualifying.
Jack would end up qualifying in 19th place on the grid for the opening race, which marked the best result of his career to date – although things could have been even better.
Adding Jack’s best sector times together, his theoretical fastest time would have seen him set the fourth quickest lap to make it into the second phase of qualifying.
Undeterred, Jack went into race day hopeful of fighting forwards into the points and his impressive pace continued as he would set the fastest time of any driver through the first sector of the lap.
Dicing on track with WTCC race winner Tom Chilton and current championship contender Jake Hill, Jack would finish the race in 18th spot – little over a second away from the points.
Jack then went even closer to the points in race two, where he would consistently show top ten pace en-route to 16th place although fortune wouldn’t be on his side in race three when he lost places whilst forced to take avoiding action when a clash between two rival drivers left him with a spinning car in his path.
A 23rd place finish was little reward for his efforts, although there remained plenty of positives to take away from the weekend.
“Although I have scored points and taken a Jack Sears Trophy win this season, I think this has been the most satisfying weekend I’ve had so far,” he said. “Of course, those results were nice, but this weekend I have shown genuine pace that at times, was better than just being top ten.
“That is a huge thing for me as it shows the progress that I am making, and it was nice at the end of the weekend for Adam Morgan – my team-mate last year – to come over to say he was amazed at how much I have come on.
“To head away from the weekend knowing that I could have been up in P4 in the first stage of qualifying if I’d hooked the lap together is something to build on, even though it was unfortunate that race day itself proved to be a bit of a battle. Even then, I got my first purple sector in touring cars, and I’m over the moon with that.
“I’m certainly taking the positives away from Silverstone rather than any negatives that there may be, and I hope that the pace displayed here is something that I can replicate in the two rounds that are still to come.”
Donington Park is next for Jack on the weekend of 9/10 October.
